FirstHealth of the Carolinas is offering a free training program to anyone who is interested in learning more about diabetes and helping people manage this disease.

The diabetes lay health advisor training, titled “FirstReach,” will teach individuals about the various types of diabetes, signs and symptoms of the disease, how to identify warning signs for poor diabetes management, how to monitor blood sugar levels and tips on how to help others manage the disease by promoting healthy lifestyle habits.

The free training will take place Feb. 16 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the third floor auditorium at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital. A light dinner will be provided. The event is hosted by FirstHealth of the Carolinas Diabetes Self-Management Program and Community Health Services and is funded by a grant from the NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund.

All trainers will receive a free tool-kit to take back into their communities and to work on diabetes awareness. Funding will be available for lay advisors to assist with health screenings and events in their communities to promote diabetes awareness, prevention and early detection.

Individuals interested in attending the “FirstReach” training program include those who may have friends or family members with diabetes, are at-risk for diabetes themselves, work in the community and can assist with increasing awareness of diabetes or volunteer in a faith setting and could be a resource for others.

If you are interested in attending this free training, contact Roxanne Leopper at (910) 715-3487 or e-mail rleopper@firsthealth.org.
