Lady Raiders roll at Swett; men win also

PEMBROKE — The Richmond women’s varsity basketball team won its third straight game with a 49-36 victory over Purnell Swett in a Southeastern Conference matchup Tuesday night.

The win allowed the Lady Raiders to improve their record to 14-2 overall, 5-1 in the SEC. LaShey Brown paced Richmond with 16 points, while I’Teionna McLauglin added seven points and Shaquitta Covington chipped in with five points.

According to Lady Raiders interim coach Nellie Harrington, Richmond led wire-to-wire, taking a 23-12 advantage into the locker room.

“Being that we only had one game last week, I thought we came out and played well,” Lady Raiders interim coach Nellie Harrington said. “I thought we played with plenty of energy and played well defensively. The girls are dedicating the rest of the season to Jammal (Kegler).”

The Lady Raiders will play two more games this week. Richmond will makeup game against Hoke at Raider Gym Thursday with tipoff slated for 6 p.m. Richmond will play a huge game at first-place Lumberton on Friday.

Richmond men 57, Purnell Swett 43

The Richmond men’s varsity basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak and got back on the winning track with a 57-43 win over Swett Tuesday night.

The victory allowed the Raiders to improve their record to 12-5, 3-3 in the SEC.

Tedarrius Wiley buried four 3-pointers and led the way with 14 points. Kasheem Reid scored 13 points and Jide Reddick netted 12 points. Anthony Keane had six steals.

Richmond led 22-20 at halftime and increased took a 39-30 advantage into the fourth quarter.

“I thought our rebounding was excellent, and our defense picked up in the second half,” Raiders coach David Laton said.

The Raiders return to action at Hoke in a makeup game Thursday with tipoff slated for 7:30 p.m.
