On Wednesday, Kadijah Harrington’s game-winning 3-pointer lifted the Green team to a 38-36 win over Pinecrest. But Harrington’s quest to be a hero again on Thursday came up short as her triple attempt at the buzzer misfired, allowing Hoke to pull out a 37-34 victory at the Ninth Grade Academy Gym.
The loss dropped the Green girls team’s record to 6-4 on the season. Richmond led 29-27 after three quarters of play. But the Green team went into a slump, while Hoke went on a 6-0 run capped by Britany Knight’s coast-to-coast layup, giving the Lady Bucks a 33-29 lead with 4:00 remaining in the contest.
Damajah Underwood, who paced the Green team with 11 points, scored a layup and then made a free throw, narrowing Hoke’s lead to 33-32 with 2:23 to go in the game. Hoke’s Tae Dixon responded with a floater to give the Lady Bucks a 35-32 advantage with a little more than two minutes remaining.
Underwood’s steal and transition basket cut Hoke’s lead down to one again at 35-34 with 1:30 seconds left to play. Both teams came up empty on the next two possessions as Richmond missed on chances to take the lead. Knight’s two foul shots gave Hoke a 37-34 lead with 13.7 remaining.
After Hoke missed a pair of free throws with 4.3 seconds left, Harrington had a chance for a 3-pointer attempt to tie the game and send it into overtime, but it hit the back of the rim.
The Green girls return to action against Purnell Swett at home on Monday with tipoff slated for 4:30 p.m.
