He was born July 21, 1916 in Rockingham to the late Benjamin Joshua Martin and Bertha Williams Martin. Mr. Martin worked in textile mills for most of his working life, serving as personnel director of Safie Mill in Rockingham until that mill’s close, and as human resource officer and supply manager of J. P. Stevens Co. until his retirement in 1981. He subsequently was employed for several years by the Town of Aberdeen. He was a member of East Rockingham Methodist Church, and was also a member of Lions International for many years.
Mr. Martin was married in 1938 to Kathleen Gore Martin, who predeceased him in 1983. Also preceding him in death were his brother Charlie Martin and sister Ollie Martin.
He is survived by his wife Mildred Smith Martin of Britthaven in Hamlet, daughter Carole Cummings (Art) of Huntersville, daughter Kathy Moss (Ed) of Monroe, granddaughters Heather Junker (Carl) of Midland and Laura Moss of Monroe, grandson Benjamin Moss (Abbie) of Waxhaw, two great-grandsons, Tommy Junker and Logan Moss, sister Kate Martin of the Hermitage, and nephew Brooks McGill. Also surviving are stepson Ronald Smith (Phyllis) and step-grandchildren Chip and Jeffrey Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 3 p.m. at East Rockingham United Methodist Church with Rev. Vann Floyd officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond Co. Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service at the church.
