But even with those high expectations, the Lady Raiders have managed to pleasantly surprise their mentor. Richmond finds itself 11-2 overall (2-1 Southeastern Conference) heading into the stretch run of the 2009-10 season.
Despite the bump of a lopsided home loss to Lumberton last Friday night, the Lady Raiders are looking forward. After a week off to regroup, Richmond resumes SEC play tonight on the road at Pinecrest. The remainder of the schedule is SEC contests.
“The girls have accomplished one of their preseason goals, which was to be playing well at midseason,” Harrington said during a recent practice. “Now we need to keep it going so we can accomplish our other goals.”
Those objectives include an SEC title and deep playoff run.
Harrington, previously the Lady Raiders’ J.V. coach, was elevated to her interim varsity coach spot early last fall. She replaced former coach David Laton, who moved over to take the reins of the men’s program after the resignation of David May.
Harrington, however, leaves no doubt about her hope to be named permanent coach of the Lady Raiders.
“I think I’ve made a good case to get the job on a full-time basis,” Harrington said.
Harrington, a former coach at Rohanen Middle School, either coached or coached against many of the girls on the Richmond Senior varsity roster now.
That familiarity with her players has paid off in a big way, Harrington said.
But for now, the focus for Harrington and her team is on the remainder of the season. Next Tuesday the Lady Raiders travel to Scotland to close out the first half of the SEC season.
Although it’s been a good season so far, Harrington said there’s still much room for improvement.
“We’ve gelled really well as a team,” Harrington said. “But we still need to put together a four-quarter effort.”
Some tinkering with the lineup will take place over the next few games, Harrington said.
“We’ve got some tough games ahead, and those games will show us what we’re really made of,” Harrington said.
