Find a good basketball team — and at it’s core, you’ll usually find a good point guard.

The Richmond Senior women’s basketball team has one of those in senior Torrie Ingram.

In her third year as a varsity player, Ingram provides the kind of experience and leadership that has helped the Lady Raiders get out to one of their best starts in recent memory. Richmond Senior, after last Friday night’s loss to Lumberton, is 11-2 overall (2-1 Southeastern Conference).

For Ingram, playing team basketball has made a difference in 2009-10.

“We work together, and the communication has been great,” Ingram said.

The Lady Raiders’ offense starts with Ingram at her point guard position.

“I control the offense, let everyone know what they’re supposed to do,” Ingram said.

It’s a role Ingram excels at, according to Richmnd Senior interim coach Nellie Harington.

“We think of her as an extension of the coaches on the floor,” Harrington said. “We expect her to run the offense, see what’s going on out there, and make adjustments.”

Harrington said Ingram is a smart player, and if there’s an aspect of her game to step up, it would be in trying to score more.

“She’s an unselfish player, and she distributes the ball well,” Harrington said. “But we want her to realize that sometimes, it’s okay to take the shot herself.”

Ingram is part of a troika of senior captains that also includes LaShey Brown and Selena Bright. None of the three is a verbal, vocal-type leader, Harrington said. But the quiet leadership they provide seems to be working out well so far in 2009-10.

“It’s nice to have that level of experience,” Harrington said.

“They work together well, and they pass the word on what we want done.”

Ingram said she and her teammates are focused on their goals, which include winning the SEC title and making a good run in the state playoffs.

Ingram and her fellow seniors are keenly aware that this is their final season of high school basketball, and this their final chance to make a mark.

“If we keep playing together like we have been, and keep encouraging each other, then good things will happen for us,” Ingram said.
