A 25-year-old Rockingham man charged with murder this month was released from prison less than two years ago and was on parole when the shooting took place.

Aaron Dain Dumas of April Lane was charged with murder Jan. 8 by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office for the death of 28-year-old Tremayne Laron Cox.

Cox was found lying in the roadway on April Lane the morning of Jan. 8. Deputies suspect Dumas left his body after being in a vehicle together.

According to reports Cox was shot, although the number of times and with what model of gun is still unknown.

Cox was found alive in the roadway, but died shortly afterwards after being transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Prior to his most recent charge, Dumas served three years and six months beginning on July 23, 2005 for felony trafficking cocaine, according to the North Carolina Department of Corrections Web site.

During his incarceration, the DOC noted three infractions: Two for disobeying orders and one for profanity.

He was released in May 2008.

Dumas’ court records additionally shows he was charged with misdemeanor assault on a female in mid-2009 for which he was given 12 months probation.

According to court documents, beginning in 2001 he was charged with crimes including misdemeanor possession of stolen goods, which was lowered from a felony and was serving a probation period for the incident.

Dumas was later charged, but not sentenced, for misdemeanor larceny, larceny of a motor vehicle, possession with intent to sell or distribute cocaine, probation violation and uttering of a forged instrument.

In February 2003, he served a probation term of 36 months for felony maintaining a dwelling for controlled substances. He was found guilty of uttering of a forged instrument in April 2003 for which he was sentenced to 36 months probation.

In 2004, probation time was extended to another 36 months for a different crime of the same nature. Dumas is being held without bond in the Richmond County Jail.

According to Chief Deputy Phil Sweatt with the Sheriff’s Office, the case is still under investigation and no update was available as of Friday afternoon.

This Is another example of the typical criminal in our state! This person has been arrested, charged and convicted over and over and over again. Probation, probation, probation, then finally he gets a small jail time sentence. Law Enforcement they did there part! District Attorneys office did there part! The judge did his or her part. So why is this person still causing problems in our county? Because the Judges hands are tied. The judges have to follow a tier system put into place by our legislators. A person has to commit crime after crime after crime before a judge can put his butt in prison. and even then the judge can only give him so much time. If you take a look at the court dockets you will find the majority of defendants are the same people over and over again. doing the same crimes over and over again.
