“We’re really excited about the schedule we’ve put together for 2010,” Earwood said. “Especially about the redesign of the IHRA’s Nitro Jam Series, the seventh renewal of the ADRL’s Dragstock event and the addition of a new race for the Mountain Motor Pro Stockers.
“I know we’ve said before that our goal is to provide a little something for every drag racing fan, but I think with this year’s schedule, we finally have done that.”
The season officially will begin with the fourth annual Spring Blast Pro Door Slammers event Feb. 27-28 and will conclude nine months later with an SVT Cobra Club event on Nov. 13. A test and tune program will begin on January 16, weather permitting, and conclude on December 11.
In between, the track will play host to four races in the Mickey Thompson Performance Tires MiRock Superbike Series, the concluding event in All-Harley Drag Racing Association motorcycle series, the second annual “Smoke Out” custom bike show, two Holcomb Motorsports Civil Wars Outlaw Street races, four races in the Phantasm Motorsports Street Wars series, the IHRA Ironman Memorial Day Bracket Races and a host of speciality events including the Drop Jaw Magazine Big Show featuring over 400 show cars and drag racing.
Nevertheless, the track’s signature events will be the March 13-14 Mountain Motor Pro Stock Association race featuring the drivers that once were the stars of the IHRA series, the April 30-May 2 IHRA Nitro Jam featuring 300 mile-an-hour Top Fuel dragsters and the ADRL’s Dragstock VII on Sept. 10-11.
Dragstock for the last five years has set one-day attendance records at The Rock, a track that first began hosting championship drag racing events in 1978.
“This track has a lot of history but the ADRL has been re-writing a lot of it,” Earwood said.
“Kenny Nowling has turned that series into something special. The ADRL is now a player on the national stage and we’re proud to have been a big part of that growth.”
Rockingham’s reputation as a track for two-wheelers likely won’t suffer in the new season with the Smoke Out, the AHDRA Finals and the MiRock Superbike Series featuring four events at the Rock and four others at Maryland International Raceway.
The first Rockingham race will be the Honda-Suzuki of Sanford Spring Nationals (March 27-28) followed by the FBR Shop Nationals (May 22-23), the Schnitz Summer Nationals (Aug. 20-22) and the Lee’s Performance Nationals (Nov. 6-7).
