Not all basketball wins are pretty. But they go into the books as a win, just the same.

Richmond Senior’s women’s basketball team had one of those wins Monday night at home, as the Lady Raiders looked sluggish at times but still pulled out a 64-26 win over visiting Anson.

With the victory, Richmond kept its season mark perfect at 5-0.

The Lady Raiders set the tone for the game in the first few minutes, scoring the first 10 points of the contest.

A LaShey Brown trifecta with just under four minutes left until intermission gave the Lady Raiders a 17-4 lead.

But the Bearcats closed the half with a 5-0 run to cut the Richmond advantage to eight points at 17-9 as the teams went to the dressing room.

Anson cut the Lady Raider lead to six in the opening two minutes of the second half at 19-13.

But then Richmond, using its smothering defense to force turnovers, put the game away. The Lady Raiders outscored the Bearcats 22-0 over the finsl six minutes to take a 41-13 lead into the final stanza.

Anson doubled its point output in the final eight minutes — playing primarily against the Richmond reserves.

Richmond interim coach Nellie Harrington said it was a matter of her team playing the other team’s game.

“There’s a tendency to do that some times,” Harrington said.

Harrington was pleased to see the Lady Raiders pick up their intensity on both ends of the floor late in the first half.

Everyone on the roster got to play, gaining valuable varsity experience, Harrington said. “We were able to switch things up a little and have some of the girls play some different positions.”

Brown was once again the Lady Raiders’ leading scorer, with 17 points.

Shaquitta Covington was, as usual, an offensive sparkplug off the bench, scoring 13 points.

Torrie Ingram and I’teionna McLaughlin chipped in with eight points apiece.

The Lady Raiders return to the court on Thursday when they travel to Cape Fear for a nonconference contest. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.

After that, they’ll return to action on Monday at the Holiday in the Pines tournament at Pinecrest High School.

The tournament runs Monday through Wednesday.
