Veteran’s Affairs remain a smoldering issue in the county as veterans gather today at 3 p.m. at the Rockingham VFW Post for a meeting to raise awareness as to what disability options are available to them. And Congressman Larry Kissell’s office says they recognize the plight facing veterans.

“I know there are many vets who need help and hate to ask, but these benefits are due to them and they are very deserving,” said Haven Kerchner, communications director for Kissell’s office. The Congressman’s staff provides several options that veterans can use as informational tools as to what they are entitled.

“There are accredited Veterans Service Organizations out there that can provide information and assistance for veterans,” Kerchner said. “Like the North Carolina Veterans Service Office, the American Legion, AMVETS, Disabled American Veterans and others.

“The most important thing is for the veterans to make sure they are taking advantage of their benefits by filling out the appropriate claims with the Veterans Administration.”

The price of health care for veterans who are, “deserving of assistance” is much higher at a veterans’ hospital than simply for one to go to a local doctor and receive the same sort of medical attention, according to Edward J. O’Neal, PDC, AMVETS Department of North Carolina.

“Earlier this year, after several constituent complaints about the Fayetteville VA Medical Center, Congressman Kissell asked the Secretary of the VA to investigate conditions at the center,” Kerchner said. Kerchner went on to explain that a new director would take over the reigns as acting director at the medical center. Kissell has since visited the hospital and continues to monitor its progress, Kerchner said.

“Congressman Kissell is always working to improve the lives of our veterans,” Kerchner said. “He believes we owe our veterans an enormous debt of gratitude for their service to our nation.”

Kerchner suggested that their office can help them navigate the process. And one of the best resources for veterans in Richmond County is the County Veterans Service Office at 997-8232. Those same veterans are also encouraged, according to Haven, to contact their three district offices for assistance with issues and can be reached at 997-2070. Today’s meeting is being held at the Rockingham VFW at 3 p.m.
