More than 80 percent of the population will suffer back pain in their lifetime. But it doesn’t have to keep you down and out of work.

Sandhills Regional Medical Center has welcomed Dr. Paul Singh of Carolina Spine Center of Hamlet. Dr. Singh brings with him a new pain management specialty to the area that uses non-surgical approaches for pain relief.

“Our goal is to improve the quality of people’s lives through an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment,” Singh said.

Carolina Spine Center, located at 936 Circlewood Drive in Hamlet, next to Sandhills Regional Medical Center, is an interventional spine clinic that addresses both chronic and acute pain. The center works with patients to establish an accurate diagnosis and optimal treatment of painful spinal and other musculoskeletal disorders.

In addition to back pain, the spine center treats neck pain; osteoarthritis; myofascial pain; sciatica (pinched nerve); peripheral neuropathy (burning and tingling in the feet and legs); failed back surgery syndrome; osteoporosis; and muscle deconditioning/tightness, among others.

There are several minimally-invasive procedures that can be performed to pinpoint and treat the exact cause of pain. Most of these procedures can be done in an outpatient setting relatively quickly, Singh said.

Singh is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and completed an interventional spine fellowship at the Penn Spine Center/Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa.

A native of Chicago, he received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind., and attended medical school at RFUMS/The Chicago Medical School in North Chicago, Ill.

Singh is trained in the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and has further expertise in the use of X-ray guided, minimally invasive procedures. He said he tries to make the injections as comfortable as possible for his patients, rarely using IV sedation although a local anesthetic can be used to numb the area.
