Man cited after running car into house

A Rockingham man was cited after he ran off the road on Nov. 23 and hit a home on Airport Road, causing more than $25,000 in damages to the home and property.

John Randall Dunn, 69, U.S. 1, Rockingham, was traveling north on Airport Road when he crossed the center line, ran off the road to the left and struck a chain link fence. He continued, crossing over Bay Street and striking several small trees and eventually a home on Airport Road.

According to reports, the driver explained to troopers that he began coughing and ran off the road which caused the accident.

No injuries were reported by the highway patrol.

He was cited with a failure to maintain lane control violation.

Damage to his 2001 Ford was estimated at $6,500 and overall damage to the home, chain link fence and other property was estimated at $25,000.

Other accidents reported by the North Carolina Highway Patrol include:

n Around 3:15 p.m. on Nov. 24, David Mark Batchelor, 52, Groometown Road, Greensboro, and Diane Cox Little, 61, Ledbetter Road, Rockingham, were involved in an accident on U.S. 1. Batchelor was attempting to make a right turn onto U.S. 1 from a closed section of the highway. Little was traveling on U.S. 1 when Batchelor pulled into Little’s lane and struck the on-coming vehicle, according to reports from the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Batchelor was cited with a failure to see before turning violation.

Batchelor was transported to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital for injuries.

Damage to Batchelor’s 1989 Chevrolet were estimated at $500 and Little’s 2006 Pontiac received an estimated $1,200 in damages.

n Edward Lee Robinson, 63, Oakhurst Drive, Charleston, W.Va. and Tressa Evadne Hogan, 29, Correll Road, Troy, were involved in an accident on U.S. 220 on Nov. 22. Robinson was stopped at the intersection of U.S. 220 and N.C. Hwy. 73 and pulled into the intersection. Hogan who was traveling on U.S. 220 struck Robinson’s vehicle.

Robinson was cited with a failure to yield to right of way violation.

Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $3,000.

n On Nov. 20, Linda Wall Marshall, 59, Hwy. 220, Candor, and Burton Randall Fuller, 47, Snead Avenue, Rockingham, were involved in an accident on U.S. 220 near Ellerbe around 11:45 a.m. Marshall had stopped at a stop sign and attempted to cross the road and drove into the path of Fuller. The vehicles collided on U.S. 220 and were moved to the shoulder.

Marshall was cited with a failure to yield violation.

Fuller’s 2005 Toyota received an estimated $4,000 in damages and Marshall’s 2000 Cadillac had $3,000.

n Christian Lafabian Ratliff, 22, Dale Peterkin Street, Hamlet, and Jason Donnell McDonald, 27, South Long Drive, Rockingham, were involved in an accident on Church Street. Reports say Ratliff said he dropped his cell phone and slammed on his brakes to retrieve the phone. According to reports, due to the sudden decrease in speed, McDonald skidded into the rear of Ratliff’s vehicle.

Ratliff was cited with driving with license revoked and an unsafe movement violation and suffered $1,500 in damage to his 2009 Chevrolet.

McDonald was cited with failure to reduce speed. His 2005 Suzuki received an estimated $4,000 in damages.

n At 2:50 p.m. on Nov. 18, Bonnie Brooks, 33, Hwy. 177, Wallace, S.C. was involved in an accident on Hwy. 177 when she ran off the road to the right, over corrected and than overturned on the shoulder of Hwy. 177, according to reports.

She was cited with a failure to maintain lane control violation.

She was transported to Sandhills Regional Medical Center.

Damage to her 2002 Dodge was estimated at $8,000.

Arrest reports published in the Richmond County Daily Journal are copied from local law enforcement records. Except for people injured in motor vehicle accidents or reportable deaths, victims including people, businesses and institutions and their addresses are not included as a matter of newspaper policy. People charged are presumed innocent until determined to be guilty by a court of law.
