Richmond didn’t take long at all to get its running-and-gunning offense untracked. Leading 5-2 a few minutes into the contest, the Raiders went on a 10-4 run for a 15-6 lead.
Leading 15-8 at the first stop, the Raiders outscored the Mustangs 31-8 in the second quarter - holding South Robeson scoreless for a stretch of more than six minutes.
South Robeson, trailing 46-16 at intermission, got no closer than 34 points in the second half.
The Raiders improved to 2-0 on the season with the win.
Despite the lopsided victory, Richmond coach Donald Pettigrew wasn’t completely pleased.
“I’m glad we’re 2-0, but we’ve got a lot of work to do on defense,” Pettigrew said. “We need to get better at our 2-3 zone, and we need to work on our half-court press. We have to want to play defense.”
Pettigrew was pleased with the effort on the offensive end of the court.
“We turned it up a notch on offense,” Pettigrew said.
The Raiders were led by Jamal Kegler, who had 22 points, including a crowd-pleasing dunk.
Trey Little had 15 points and Shydamion Ellerbe added 10. Tyquan Breeden added eight points for Richmond.
Richmond is idle until next Thursday, Dec. 3, when the Raiders will travel to Whiteville. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
