On Saturday about 25 Cub Scouts and pack leaders from Rockingham and Hamlet participated in a flag disposal at the home of American Legion District CDR Martin Nielsen.

Nielsen, a retired Navy Chief Warrant Officer led the boys in a lecture about flag etiquette and flag history before the scouts retired two dozen worn flags.

This was part of the partnership fostered this year between the American Legion and the local Cubs Scouts packs.

“The Cub Scouts are the future of our great nation and we need to give them all the right information to love and respect our wonderful country,” Nielsen said.

The flag disposal ceremony took about 30 minutes to complete and was followed by a lunch of hot dogs, chips and drinks for scouts and leaders.

“Fun and knowledge was had by all and we look forward to doing it again in the near future,” Nielsen said.

All of the scouts were from Pack 49 of Rockingham, Pack 64 of Rockingham, and Pack 527 of Hamlet. Also in attendance was Cub Master Misty Morgan and pack leaders Eric Snipes and Lynn Snipes from Rockingham Pack 49; Cub Master Scott Brewer and cub leaders Nina Morrison, Gene Poston, Jason Stroll and Joey Lisk from Rockingham Pack 64; Cub Master Tonya Freeman and pack leaders Mike Hinson, Kathy Caswell, Brooks Price and Brandie Price From Pack 527 of Hamlet; the new District Executive for the Cub Scouts, Alex Parman; and many parents and supporters.

If you have a flag that is now unserviceable contact your local American Legion, Veterans group or the Cub Scouts.
