The shelter currently has 87 cats in-house with 65 cats and kittens available for adoption. Of the the adoptable, 36 have either been spayed or neutered and have received a one-year rabies vaccine. Many of these are longtimers and are "Lucky Pets" — their adoption fees have been reduced through designated donations.
If a lucky pet cat adoption fee is $45 then you can adopt two fixed cats for that amount, said Bacon. The $6 fee for each rabies vaccine is in addition to the adoption fee. Cats must leave the shelter in carriers; reusable cardboard carriers are available for $5 from the HSRC gift shop or adopters use their own carriers.
Now is the time to adopt several new family friends at a bargain, said Bacon. The normal adoption fee is $65 which covers the cost of the cat's spay or neuter surgery, first distemper vaccine and deworming.
The animal shelter is located at 529 US Highway 74 Business West, two miles west of downtown Rockingham. The shelter is open to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. The shelter is closed to the public every Wednesday. Next week the shelter will be closed Wednesday and Thursday for the holiday.
