The Richmond junior varsity men’s basketball team tipoff the season with a strong showing.

Jamal Keglar scored a game-high 24 points, while Justin Green added 14 points and Tuquan Breenden had 13 points as the JV Raiders cruised to 69-51 victory over South View Tuesday night at Raider Gymnasium.

“I was kind of nervous because we only had seven players, but I knew the guys were in real good shape and it was a good start to the season,” JV Raiders coach Donald Pettigrew said. Jamal is a good scorer and he has a chance to be a real good player.”

The game was tied at 17 after the first quarter and evened at 25 with 2:54 remaining in the first half. But Richmond closed out the second with a 7-0 run capped by Keglar’s driving baseline finger rolled layup to give the Raiders a 32-25 halftime lead.

Richmond (1-0) kept the pressured on in the second half as the JV Raiders extended the advantage to 50-38 going into the fourth quarter. South View never threatened Richmond in the final period.

The JV Raiders return to action next Tuesday against South Robeson at Raider Gym beginning at 6:30 p.m.

JV Lady Raiders win opener

Keanya Harris and Tiara Ellerbe both scored 11 points apiece to lead the Richmond junior varsity women’s team to a season-opening 59-18 route over South View Tuesday.

First-year JV Lady Raiders coach Lisa Bigley earned her first win. Richmond held the Lady Tigers to under double digits in each quarter.

“The first game turned out really well, and the girls really played strong on defense,” Bigley said. “We’ve been working hard on our press in practice and we were able to force a lot of turnovers that resulted in fastbreak layups.”

The JV Lady Raiders return to action next Tuesday versus South Robeson at Raider Gym with tipoff at 5 p.m.
