Two vehicles were involved in a near head-on collision on Nov. 8 after one of the driver’s attempted to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone on U.S. Hwy. 1.
Around 8:10 a.m. on Nov. 8, Herbert Wayne Harner Jr., 25, Crest Road, Aberdeen, and Vonetta Shanta Gibson, 35, West Avenue, Hamlet, were traveling on U.S. Hwy. 1 near Hoffman when Harner attempted to pass a vehicle traveling south on U.S. 1 in a no-passing zone and veered off the left side of the road and smashed into Gibson on the shoulder of the north bound lane, according to reports from the highway patrol.
Gibson had swerved off the road to avoid hitting Harner head-on.
Harner was cited with improper passing.
No major injuries were reported.
Gibson’s 1997 Honda received $4,500 damage and Harner’s 2005 Honda received $3,500 in damage.
Other accidents reported to the North Carolina Highway Patrol include:
n Two drivers were taken to local Richmond County hospitals following an accident on Battley Dairy Road on Nov. 8 around 2:07 p.m.
Lilyagnes Marie Baskins, 71, Battley Dairy Road, Rockingham, and Denis Patrick, 51, Hwy. 177, Wallace, S.C., were involved in an accident after Baskins attempted to make a left turn from a private driveway onto Battley Dairy when she collided with Patrick who was traveling southbound.
The vehicles came to rest on Battley Dairy.
Baskins was cited with an unsafe movement violation.
Damage to Patrick’s 2007 Chrysler was estimated at $4,000 and damage to Baskin’s 1992 Chevrolet was estimated at $1,500.
n On Nov. 8, Richard Joseph Levnier, 20, Carla Court, Rockingham, was involved in an accident around 8 a.m. on Old Cheraw Highway when, according to reports, Leviner swerved to avoid hitting a deer, ran off the road to the left and struck several small trees.
After impact, the vehicle was driven back to the shoulder by Leviner.
No injuries were reported.
Damage to his 1998 Mazda was estimated at $6,000.
n A motorcyclist lost control of his bike on Nov. 8 at an intersection neat Snead Avenue and was forced to dump the vehicle on the shoulder of the eastbound lane.
Around 3:30 p.m., Dwayne Allison Everett was traveling west on Snead Avenue when he was unable to stop at a stop sign and lost control.
No significant injuries were reported.
Damage to his 2007 Harley Davidson was estimated at $800.
n On Nov. 7 around 12:25 p.m., Myra M. Brown, 43, Flint Avenue, High Point, and Vaness Diaz, 20, Creek Ridge Road, Greensboro, were involved in an accident on U.S. Hwy. 1
According to reports from the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Brown was attempting to pass Diaz and another vehicle, unaffected by the accident, when Diaz attempted to pass the vehicle in front of her and side-swiped Brown’s vehicle.
Diaz improperly changed lanes and struck Brown.
All vehicles were moved to the shoulder of U.S. 1.
No injuries were reported.
Damage to Brown’s 2009 Toyota was estimated at $200 and damage to Diaz’s 1994 Honda was estimated at $200.
n Tyrone Lamont Covington, 22, Fifth Street, and Zeanora Lanese Johnson, 28, Dobbins Heights Avenue, Hamlet, were involved in an accident on Fifth Street on Nov. 3 around 9:50 a.m.
Covington has crossed the center line and collided with Johnson in the middle on Fifth Street
Both vehicles came to rest on Fifth Street.
Johnson was transported to Sandhills Regional Medical Center for injuries.
Covington got a left of center violation.
Damage to Covington’s 1996 Buick was estimated at $8,000 and damage to Johnson’s 1998 Plymouth was estimated at $3,000.
