Rockingham’s municipal government set apart time to remember the shooting of long-time City Clerk Johnsey Lunceford’s son, Alonzo.

Mayor Gene McLaurin opened Rockingham City Council’s regular meeting Tuesday with an update on the Rockingham native’s condition, who was wounded in the Fort Hood attack last week. They then observed a moment of silence for all those wounded and touched by the tragic events in Texas.

“We can not begin to understand why this happened, or what the motives were,” McLaurin told those in the chamber. “What we do know is that 12 soldiers lost their lives and more than 30 were wounded. One of those wounded was Rockingham native Alonzo Lunceford, whom we in Richmond County know as ‘Mac.’”

Johnsie Lunceford has served as a city employee for about three decades, and is scheduled to retire in January. She is currently in Texas by the bedside of her son.

“The message that I conveyed to Mac was that our community is lifting him, and all the soldiers who were wounded on that tragic day, we are lifting them up in our prayers,” McLaurin said. “... I think as we are here on the eve of Veteran’s Day, we need to pay a special tribute to our veterans. We don’t thank them enough, and on an occasion like this we are reminded that we can not take for granted any of those freedoms we enjoy, even here on our own soil.”

A short moment of silence was followed by an invocation from AMVETS Post 316 Chaplain Cass Vincent.
