Temple Christian varsity hoops teams sweep Cornerstone

The Temple Christian men’s and women’s basketball teams opened their seasons with road victories.

The men’s team knocked off Fayetteville Cornerstone Christian Academy as Garret Jacobs scored 16 points and Felton Pross chipped in with 12 in the win.

On the women’s side, Ruth Byrd netted 12, while Meredith Stephenson and Alayna Conner each added five for the Lady Tigers in the victory.

Cornerstone swept the junior varsity contests. In the junior varsity boys’ game, Cary Robertson scored 14 points for the Tigers. In the junior varsity girls’ game, Payton Davis was the leading scorer for Temple Christian.

The junior varsity boys’ and the varsity teams return to action Tuesday when they play host to Lumberton’s Antioch.

Ellerbe accepting registrations

The city of Ellerbe is currently taking sign-ups for its youth baskeball leagues for boys and girls through Nov. 6.

The cost is $36 per child. Practices will be held in Ellerbe and games will be played against the Rockingham Parks and Recreation.

The age category breakdown for the individual leagues are as follows: Mini-Mite league - boys and girls (7-8) cannot turn 9-years-old on or before Jan. 1. Mite league - boys and girls (9-10) cannot turn 11 on or before Jan. 1. Midget league - boys and girls (11-12) cannot turn 13 on or before Jan. 1. Junior league - boys and girls (13-14) cannot turn 15 on or before Jan. 1. Senior league - boys (15-16) cannot turn 17 on or before Jan. 1.

Forms may be picked up at Horton’s, E.E. Vuncannon Inc., Ellerbe Pharmacy and the Ellerbe Town Hall. All registrations and money need to be turned in to the Ellerbe Town Hall.

Big Game Hunt registrations accepted

Registration continues for the big game hunting season. The hunt dates will be Nov. 27-28.

The Anson County Chamber of Commerce will offer money prizes for first through fifth place in buck and doe categories, and first through fourth place in the youth buck and doe categories. Door prizes will be available during the annual banquet at the Ansonville Volunteer Fire Department on Nov. 28.
