The 54th Rotary Auction and Barbecue at the Rockingham National Guard Armory is Nov. 3.
Through the years this event has become a tradition the entire county looks forward to and participates in. It doesn’t get any more Americana than a good ole Southern barbecue, Election Day and an Auction all wrapped up in one. The smell of barbecue chicken and pork fill the air and people flock to the Rockingham Armory all day long for lunch, dinner or just a plate of some of the best barbecue around. Tommy Deese, Wiley Mabe and crew cook the most delicious whole hams chopped by hand and flavored with the crew’s secret barbecue sauce. Before the first rooster crows, several Rotarians are up at 4:30 in the morning grilling the chicken provided by Perdue and it’s as fresh as it gets.
Meals will be served from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and again from 4:30 until 7 p.m. Eat in or have it delivered to your home or business when you purchase 5 or more plates. Stop by and visit with friends and view the auction items.
Barbecue chicken or chopped barbecuewith Cole slaw, potato salad, rolls and tea are $7 per plate.
Baked goods are on sale all day and prepared by cooks from all over the county.
During the day visit the country store full of interesting items to be sold ranging from $1 to $20. Tickets will be available for the 2009 Chevy Colorado Truck Raffle; the four other used vehicles and a $1,000 Visa gift card or $500 Visa gift card to keep your vehicle full of gas or to shop with. The Auction starts at 7 p.m. and lasts until everything is sold, usually around 10 p.m. Auctioneers Ronnie Hawks and Mike Parker will conduct the auction.
The funds that are raised at this event will be put right back into the community by contributing to local charities that have met certain criteria through the Rotary application process. Last year Rotary donated more than $53,000 to charities. This year the Rotarians have set their goal for $60,000.
Stop by the Rockingham Armory Nov. 3, and help support our community by participating in the Rockingham Rotary BBQ and Auction.
