Local businesses report receiving counterfeit money

Three businesses in the Rockingham area reported receiving counterfeit money from an unknown suspect over the past week.

One business on Rockingham Road reported the suspect entered the store and purchased an $18 pair of shoes with a $100 bill, according to a report from the Rockingham Police Department.

The cashier gave the suspect the change.

It wasn’t until later that the business realized the $100 bill was a counterfeit.

Two other businesses on East Broad Avenue and U.S. Hwy. 74 reported $100 bills being given to them for purchases.

One of the businesses on U.S. Hwy. 74 realized the money was fake after being given a $100 bill for a purchase and contacted the Rockingham Police while the suspect was still in the store.

By the time police had arrived on the scene, the suspect had left the scene on foot.

Other incidents reported to the Rockingham Police Department include:

n A business on East Broad Avenue reported a lock set valued at $32 stolen.

n A woman on Long Drive reported being assaulted while getting into her vehicle. A witness to the incident broke up the fight.

n A 2000 Nissan Maxima was stolen from Robinson Street. The car is valued at $5,000.

n Two suspects stole $238 worth of merchandise from an East Broad Avenue grocery store.

n A business on East Broad Avenue reported $68 worth of property being stolen from the store.

n At a local motel, a woman reported sexual battery after a man attempted to grope her. The man had been drinking alcohol at the time.

n On Hammer Road, a home had been broken into and over $3,200 worth of property being stolen while the homeowner was away on business.

n A business on East Broad Avenue reported an armed robbery after two men entered the store and demanded money. The suspects stole approximately $5,000 during the robbery.

Arrests reported by the Rockingham Police Department include:

n Robert Arthur Turner, 41, McDowell Street, Bennettsville, S.C., was arrested for misdemeanor larceny. His bond was set at $1,000.

n Jennifer Tagg Gillespie, 29, Great Falls Circle, Rockingham, was arrested for two counts of failure to appear. Her bond was set at $500.

n James Wayne Gibson, 52, Rainwater Lane, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor damage to personal property. His bond was set at $500.

n Andieh Renee Clark, 26, Westwood Drive, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor assault and battery. She was released with a written promise to appear in court.

Incidents reported to the Hamlet Police Department include:

n A homeowner on Henderson Street reported two flower pots stolen from the front porch of the house. The plants were valued at $150.

n A $3 bag of yard mulch was reported missing by a homeowner on Hamilton Street.

n On Third Street, a $50 light pole, $20 bird feeder and $20 squirrel cover went missing.

n A homeowner on 3rd Street told Hamlet Police that $60 worth of Lorecets had been taken from their home.

n On Hylan Avenue, a $300 gaming system and $50 surge protector were reported stolen. Damage to the property was $350, which included a sliding glass door and exterior window.

n A woman reported being assaulted by three males.

n A car on Wilmington Street was broken into and a $200 CD player was taken. Damage to the vehicle was $35.

n Someone on Wilmington Street was reported communicating threats.

n A homeowner on Locust Street reported to the Hamlet Police Department that $6,300 in assorted property missing from their home, which included pain killers, coin collections and jewelry.

n A ladder and bench were stolen from a property on McDonald Avenue. The combined value of property missing is $200.

n A woman on Maple Avenue reported her identity stolen after she received calls from a collections agency looking for approximately $800 in debt.

n A vehicle owner on Tall Pines reported their 1997 Ford stolen, along with a $400 guitar, $300 amplifier and their social security card and driver license.

Arrests reported by the Hamlet Police Department include:

n Devin Warren Moseley, 23, Winston-Salem Street, Hamlet, was arrested for misdemeanor breaking and entering and misdemeanor harassing phone calls. Bond was set at $500.

n Kwamane Shaquan Smith, 20, Old Forrest Road, Hamlet, was arrested for misdemeanor resisting a public officer. Bond was set at $1,000.

n Julian Nickolas Burns, 31, Spring Hill Road, Red Springs, was arrested for misdemeanor larceny and misdemeanor disorderly conduct. Bond was set at $10,000.
