The Richmond Senior men’s soccer team will have some momentum going into the Southeastern Conference tournament.

The Raiders overcame a 1-0 deficit to score four unanswered goals and defeated Scotland 4-1 Wednesday on Senior Night at Raider Stadium. Richmond wrapped up the regular season with a 9-9-1 overall record and 2-5-1 in the SEC.

Even with the win, Howard said Richmond will still the fifth seed in the SEC conference tournament that will start on Monday. Richmond will be at either Scotland (7-10, 3-5) or Lumberton in the first round of the tourney at 7 p.m.

Howard added Richmond must win the tournament to qualify for the state playoffs.

“We’ve got to win the next three games to keep our season going, but we’re capable of getting it done,” Howard said. “We’ve got to get some breaks and play consistent soccer.”

Scotland jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal from John Yarborough, but the Raiders grabbed controlled from there.

Zack Shilen scored from 5-yards out from an assist from Davis Hilton to tie the contest at 1 in at the 12-minute mark.

Richmond took a 2-1 lead into intermission when senior Tom Cox scored off a pass from Adnon Kohn in the 35th minute. Cox was able to boot the kick past Scotland’s goalie Josh Wheeler, who came out of the box to contest the shot.

“I really wanted to get a goal and win this game on Senior Night,” Cox said. “We really played as a team and we did a good job of connecting passes.”

The Raiders carried over the momentum into the second half as Armando Aquilar blasted a shot into the back of the net from 25 yards out to extend Richmond’s advantage to 3-1 at the 70th minute mark.

“I really didn’t expect it to go in and I was a little surprised that it did,” Aquilar said. “I’m just glad I was able to contribute to the team’s victory.”

Richmond capped the scoring when Brandon Benoist scored from 10 yards out, before the buzzer sounded to give the Raiders a three-goal victory.

“Richmond just turned it up a notch and was pumped up for Senior Night,” Scotland coach Colin McDavid said. “They had more possessions than us and out-hustled us to the ball.”

n The JV Raiders wrapped up their season with a 3-1 victory over Scotland Wednesday night.

Richmond finished with a 4-6 overall record. All the scoring happened in the second half as Aaron Callahan gave Richmond a 1-0 lead. After Scotland tied it at 1, Curt Kindley’s goal put the Raiders ahead 2-1. Brandon Knorr added an insurance goal for Richmond late in the contest.
