PEMBROKE — The Richmond Senior junior varsity football team won its fourth straight game Thursday night with a 20-6 victory over Southeastern Conference foe Purnell Swett.

The victory improved the JV Raiders’ record to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in the conference. Last week, Richmond had its best game on offense in the 41-14 win over Hoke. This time, the defense stepped up and forced five Rams’ turnovers in the contest.

“Our offense struggled due to the wet conditions, but our defense stepped up,” JV Raider coach Steve Wood said. “We bent, but we didn’t break and made the plays when we had to.”

The game was scoreless going into the second quarter, until Steve Houston scored a touchdown and Todd Inman’s extra point gave Richmond a 7-0 lead. Raheem Ellerbe reached the end zone later in the quarter to extend the advantage to 14-0 at halftime.

According to Wood, Richmond fumbled on the opening kickoff of the third and Swett gained possession at the Raiders’ 35-yard line. But Wood said the Raiders forced the Rams to give up the ball on downs.

Later in the third, Nijamel Goodwin intercepted a Swett pass and returned the ball to the Swett 45. The Raiders capitalized on the turnover as Daryl Locklear capped the drive on a 4-yard touchdown scamper, increasing the lead to 20-0.

Swett scored early in the fourth quarter to prevent the shutout.

The JV Raiders return to action at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lumberton.
