Last week, Jalen McClean rushed for 183 yards and two touchdowns in the Scots’ 28-12 victory over the Green team.
This time, Justin Brown took advantage of his opportunity as he ran eight times for 239 yards and scored four touchdowns to help Scotland defeat the Gold team 36-14 at the Ninth Grade Academy football field.
The victory improved the Scots to a perfect 5-0 record, while Richmond dropped to 4-1 on the season.
“Last week, Scotland took it the Green team, and they followed up that performance by playing another strong game,” Gold team coach Phillip Waddell said.
Scotland led wire-to-wire as the Scots led 2-0 after the first quarter. Richmond attempted to punt on fourth down deep in its own territory. But the snap sailed over the head of punter Cameron Kelly and out of the end zone, resulting in a safety.
Later in the second, Brown scored on a 61-yard touchdown run down the sidelines, giving Scotland an 8-0 lead with 8:01 remaining in the quarter.
Richmond tried to answer Scotland’s score as the Gold team drove inside the red zone, but CJ Lyons fumbled on second-and-five at the Scots’ 14-yard line and the ball was recovered by Scotland.
The Gold team forced the Scots to punt and Richmond closed the gap before halftime. Cody Wilson connected with Devontae Watkins for a 32-yard pass, which put the Gold team at the Scots’ 9. Damian Brayboy scored two plays later from four yards out, cutting Scotland’s lead to 8-6 at halftime.
However, Scotland pulled away in the second half. Brown scored his second touchdown of the contest as he scampered 60 yards to paydirt in the third to increase the lead to 14-6.
Brown burned the Gold team’s defense for another long run later in the third as he scored on a 57-yard touchdown run to extend the advantage to 20-6.
“Justin was a receiver in the last game, but (McClean) my running back got pulled to the JVs,” Scots coach Michael Sellers said. “Justin has phenomenal speed, and is a game breaker. Our offensive line also controlled the line of scrimmage.”
In the fourth quarter, Richmond mounted a drive to the Scots’ 15, but Scotland’s Derrick Strickland stripped and took the ball away from Winford Dawkins and ran 81 yards down to the Gold team’s 4.
The Gold team committed four turnovers, three fumbles and an interception.
The Scots capitalized on the takeaway as Ryan Leak scored on 3-yard run on a quarterback sneak, and the 2-point conversion to give Scotland a 28-6 lead.
Richmond came back to cut it to 28-14 with 7:04 left as Watkins scored on a 23-yard reception from Wilson. Lyons caught the 2-point conversion, cutting the Scots’ lead down to 14.
But Brown scored for the final time as ran 44 yards to the end zone and added the 2-point conversion to complete Scotland’s 22-point victory.
The Gold team returns to action at 4 p.m. Thursday at Pinecrest.
