Scotland’s Jalen McClean breaks away from the Richmond Ninth Grade Academy Green team’s defense en route to 53-yard touchdown run.
The Richmond Ninth Grade Academy Green football team suffered its first loss Thursday afternoon.

Scotland’s tailback Jalen McClean rushed for 183 yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns to help lead the Scots past the Green team 28-12 at the Ninth Grade Academy football field.

The loss dropped the Green team’s record to 3-1 on the season, while Scotland improved its mark to 4-0. Scotland’s defense limited Richmond’s offense to 181 total yards, forced two turnovers and held the Green team to three first downs.

“I thought our guys played hard, but we just couldn’t produce much offensively,” Green team coach Phillip Waddell said. “Scotland had some good athletes on defense and they did a good job of getting after us.”

The game was a stalemate until the second quarter when McClean broke up the middle for a 53-yard touchdown run. McClean also scored on the 2-point conversion when he caught the pass from Storm Davis, giving the Scots an 8-0 lead at halftime.

“Jalen was able to get into the open field, made one guy miss and was able to get into the end zone,” Scots coach Michael Sellers said. “His big run really helped set the tone for us.”

Things went from bad to worse for the Green team at the start of the third as running back Robert Williams had the ball popped out from behind by Scotland’s Johnny Strickland and the fumble was recovered by the Scots’ Derrick Strickland at the Raiders’ 1-yard line.

Scotland cashed in on the turnover when Trashawn Gregory scored on a quarterback sneak on third-and-goal and McClean ran in the 2-point conversion as the Scots extended the advantage to 16-0.

“That was a big play because we wanted to get some momentum going, but unfortunately we laid the ball on the ground and they took advantage of it,” Waddell said.

Richmond’s offense finally showed some life late in third quarter. On third-and-19 at midfield, Tevin Zinnerman completed a halfback pass to Chris Jackson, putting the Gold team at the Scots’ 11. On the next play, quarterback Antonio Edens connected with Jackson for a 11-yard touchdown pass, cutting the Scots’ lead to 16-6.

The Raiders’ defense forced a three-and-out on Scotland’s next series. The Scots attempted a fake punt on fourth down, but Richmond sniffed out the play and took over at the Scots’ 17.

On the following play, Derrick Strickland sacked Edens for a 14-yard loss. On third-and-19, Williams’ 18-yard run put Richmond in a fourth-and-1 situation, but Antiwon Davis was stuffed for no gained and Scotland took over on downs.

“We had a chance there to get back into the game, but we just couldn’t convert when we needed to,” Waddell said.

The Scots scored five plays later as McClean scored on a 59-yard run for his second score of the contest, giving Scotland a 22-6 lead in the fourth.

Richmond turned the ball over on the following series and the Scots’ Daquan Graham scored on a 7-yard touchdown run. Graham also ran in the 2-point conversion to push the lead to 28-6.

Williams, who rushed had 19 carries for a 114 yards, completed the scoring when he scored on a 69-yard touchdown scamper late in the quarter for the game’s final margin.

The Green team returns to action at 4 p.m. Thursday at Pinecrest.
