Complaint about drug activity leads to man’s arrest

David Shonkar Smith, 36, Country Home Road, Rockingham, was arrested for possession with intent to sell or distribute marijuana, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and misdemeanor assault on a female on Sept. 27, according to reports.

The Rockingham Police Department received a call from the Crime Stoppers hotline that there was potential drug activity at a motel on South Hancock Street.

Police arrived on the scene and entered the room with no resistance.

Smith told officers there were no drugs in the room and allowed officers to search the premises. The officer soon found a tin in the room with marijuana, two tubes of marijuana seeds, a blunt, a pair of scissors and other assorted drug paraphernalia.

Smith took the credit for all the marijuana in the room and told the police there was a warrant out for his arrest.

After searching the database, Smith did come up with a warrant for assault on a female.

Officers also contacted DSS after discovering a child in the room.

Smith’s bond was set at $10,000.

Other arrests reported to the Rockingham Police Department include:

n Robert Matthew Sheffield, 29, Sandhurst Drive, Rockingham, was arrested for felony possession with intent to sell or distribute cocaine, felony maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for a controlled substance and misdemeanor simple possession. His bond was set at $10,000.

n Troy Christopher Preslar, 36, Lakeview Trail, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor intoxicated and disruptive. Bond was set at $1,000.

n Glen Elliott, 46, Third Avenue, Pee Dee, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and misdemeanor failure to reduce speed. He was released on a written promise to appear in court.

n Brenda Jane Phifer, 26, Valley Hill Drive, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor order for arrest. Bond was set at $1,000.

n Ricky Thomas Ferguson, 50, Whispering Pines Road, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor assault on a female.

Incidents reported to the Rockingham Police Department include:

n A business on East Broad Avenue reported $355 worth of tool sets being stolen. Security cameras caught the man on tape and is a suspect in other thefts.

n A bank on East Broad Avenue reported several kids walking through the back parking lot and pulling a sign out of the ground.

n A man reported his car being broken into while in a local business. Roughly $100 worth of property was stolen, including xanex and lorecet.

n A man reported his ex-girlfriend assaulted him and another party while talking outside of their apartment on Pineridge Drive. The woman rammed the back end of his Dodge truck while a child was inside of it. She left the scene and damage to the truck was estimated at $500.

n Someone reported a domestic dispute on Rush Street.

n A business on East Broad Avenue reported a former employee stole the company credit card and used it at local gas stations.

n A homeowner on Eastside Drive reported someone communicating threats and making harassing phone calls to the address.

n The owner of two American Pit Bull terriers reported them stolen. The value of both dogs was set at $1,000.

n Two men were caught tampering with a cable company’s wiring on East Washington Street.

n Someone reported an assault on a female on Montclaire Drive.

n Someone reported an assault on a female on Cauthen Drive.

n At a business on East Broad Avenue, a man was reported assaulting a woman in the parking lot.

Accidents reported to the North Carolina Highway Patrol include:

n On Sept. 24 at 11:20 a.m. on U.S. 220, Clarence Melvin Terry, 45, Dockery Road, Rockingham and Harvey Junior Smith, 59, Sidney Lane, Reidsville, were involved in an accident after Terry attempted to cross U.S. 220 from Haywood Cemetery Road onto Harrington Road and traveled into the path of Smith. The two cars collided in the right lane of the south bound lanes of U.S. 220. After impact, Terry crossed the center line and struck a stop sign. Smith ran off the road and struck a guardrail end treatment on the shoulder, according to reports from the North Carolina Highway Patrol office.

Terry and Smith, along with a passenger riding in Smith’s vehicle, were transported to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital for injuries.

Damage to Terry’s 1996 Nissan was estimated at $4,500 and Smith’s 2008 Suzuki was estimated at $5,500. Damage to state property is estimated at $4,250.

Terry was cited with a failure to yield violation.

n On Sept. 23 at 7:44 a.m. on Old Cheraw Highway, Kassie Chantale Beachum, 19, Waccamaw Drive, Salisbury and Miranda Emmaline Baucom, 16, Bryan Circle, Rockingham, were involved in an accident after Beachum failed to yield to the right of way and collided with Baucom on Old Cheraw Highway.

Both drivers and a passenger riding with Beachum, were taken to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital, according to reports.

Damage estimated to Beachum’s 1997 Pontiac was $4,000 and damage to Baucom’s 1995 Honda was estimated at $6,000.

Beachum was cited with a failure to yield violation.

n At 4:40 p.m. on Sept. 22 on Ledbetter Street, Jonathan Lamorris Short, 38, Horseshoe Road, Rockingham, and James Robert Elvis, 36, Clearfield Drive, Rockingham, were involved in a collision after Short failed to yield to the right of way after coming to a stop at a stop sign and struck Elvis. The vehicles were moved to the shoulder, according to the Highway Patrol.

Damage estimated to Short’s 1998 Ford was estimated at $500 and damage to Elvis’ 1994 GMC was estimated at $1,000.

Short was cited with a failure to yield violation.

n On Sept. 21 at 7:24 a.m. on Old Charlotte Highway, Joseph Russell Henne, 18, Cartledge Creek Road, was involved in an accident after crossing the median and striking a fence. Henne was located later that morning on Cartledge Creek Road with Henne still inside.

Henne was taken to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital.

Damage to his 1999 Ford was estimated at $1,500 and property damage was estimated at $100.

n At 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 20 on Two Branch Road, Zachary Dean Russell, 16, Hwy. 74, Rockingham and Seth Garrett Ducasse, 18, Fayetteville Road, Rockingham, were involved in an accident after Russell failed to look before backing and collided with Ducasse who was traveling up Two Branch Road, according to reports.

Damage to Russell’s 2009 Pontiac is estimated at $300 and damage to Ducasse’s 1991 Toyota is estimated at $250.

n On Sept. 24 at 9:15 a.m. on U.S. 1, Crystal Gail Barrios-Pacheco, 31, Williams Street, Hoffman, Glenn Gordon Williams, 18, Ledbetter Road, Rockingham, and Fred Homer Smith, 71, Deer Trail, Hamlet, were involved in an accident after Williams and Smith had come to a stop at a construction zone. Barrios-Pacheco failed to reduce speed and slammed into the back of Williams, who than struck the rear of Smith, according to reports from the patrol.

Damage to Barrios-Pacheco’s 1996 Ford was estimated at $4,000. Damage to Williams’ 2002 Mitsubishi was estimated at $2,000. Damage estimated to Smith’s 2001 Toyota was estimated at $1,000.

Barrios-Pacheco was cited with failure to reduce speed.

n On Sept. 24, at 5:08 p.m. on Battley Dairy Road, William Haywood Hayes III, 19, Sleepy Hollow Drive, Rockingham, and Claricy Taylor Jarrell, 29, Gardenia Street, were involved in an accident after Hayes failed to yield to the right of way and crossed Battley Dairy on an ATV. He was struck by Jarrell who was traveling north on Battley Dairy and did not have time to react, according to reports.

Damage to Jarrell’s 2000 Jeep was estimated at $800.

Hayes was cited with driving with license revoked and careless and reckless driving violations.
