Hamlet police question suspect in thefts

Hamlet Police apprehended a suspect on Sept. 17 in connection with home robberies on Walnut Street..

One homeowner on Walnut Street reported his storage building had been broken into sometime during the night. He noted he had locked the building around 6 p.m. on Sept. 16.

After the break-in, a miter saw, a 4-wheeler and its charger were discovered missing and the storage building door was severely damaged. Property lost or damaged was estimated at $1,510.

Another homeowner reported a garden tractor and other items being stolen. The value of the property is roughly $4,700.

Police received a tip that a suspicious person was riding a garden tractor on Beech Street in Hamlet on Sept. 17. They began patrolling the Beech Street area when they saw the tractor turn onto Walnut Street.

When officers stopped the person on the tractor and spoke to him, they asked who the tractor belonged to and he at first denied he knew where it had come from, but later admitted he knew who it belonged to.

The suspect was taken into custody and is pending further investigation by the Hamlet PD.

Other incidents reported by the Hamlet Police Department include:

n A resident on Louis Breeden Boulevard reported their dog was attacked by their neighbor’s dog.

n A homeowner on Washington Street told police that someone had hit their fence with a car and left the scene. The homeowner did not see nor hear the accident.

n A man on Charlotte Street reported his wallet stolen while taking a shower at his home. He had left it on the dresser when he went into the bathroom.

n A woman was charged with falsely filing a police report after she told police that someone had grabbed her hand and stolen a ring off of it at a local store.

Arrests reported by the Hamlet Police include:

n Harley Thomas Allen, 61, Miniturn Avenue, Hamlet, was arrested for misdemeanor assault on a female. Bond was set at $500.

Incidents reported by the Rockingham Police Department include:

n An adult store on East Broad Avenue reported an attempted theft of merchandise after two people were stopped upon leaving the store and found various items on their persons.

n A business on East Broad Avenue reported a man entering the store and panhandling from the customers. He was also reported causing a disturbance after showing a knife to one of the employees.

n At a local fitness center, a man reported his car being broken into and his wallet was stolen. The property stolen is valued at approximately $600.
