The Richmond Ninth Grade Academy Green volleyball team made quick work of Hoke Monday afternoon.

The Green team swept the Lady Bucks in both matches and didn’t dropped a game in the process. Richmond won 25-2 and 25-17 in the first match and defeated Hoke 25-5 and 25-18 in the second match.

The two victories improved the Green team’s record to 3-1 on the season. Last week, the Green team split its two matches with South View. The Tigers won 25-21 and 25-16 in the first match, but Richmond rebounded to win 25-16 and 25-16 in the second match.

Green team coach Neely Sullivan admitted her team struggled serving against the Lady Tigers. Sullivan said she made a conscious effort for the team to work on serving last week in practice and she was pleased with the improvement.

“We missed very few serves in this game, unlike last week when had a little trouble serving the ball over the net,” Sullivan said. “The girls worked hard at getting better at it and the hard work paid off.”

Kadesha Jasper led the way with a game-high 33 service points. Jasper set the tone in the first game with 19 straight points, allowing Richmond to roll to a 25-2 victory in the first game. Kendra York contributed 14 points and Holli Hudson added 11 points.

“Kadesha got us going and kept Hoke off balance,” Sullivan said. “I also thought Kendra improved from last week hitting the ball. Overall, as a team, I liked how we hustled around on the floor.”

Sullivan added she wants to see her team talk a little more on the court, but does enjoy watching the camaraderie the girls have displayed so far in practice and in the first four matches.

“There are times where we lack communication on the court, but I believe that will improve,” Sullivan said. “But what I like about these girls is they get along well together and they learn from their mistakes. Hopefully, we can keep winning and keep building up our confidence.”

The Green team returns to action at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Lumberton.

Gold team splits

The Ninth Grade Gold volleyball team earned a split against Lumberton Monday afternoon.

The Lady Pirates won 25-23 and 25-23 in the first match, but Richmond bounced back to win 25-21 and 25-14 in the second. Kevyna Stanback had a team-high 13 service points, while Maxie Poole and Diamond Jackson both added 12 points.

The Gold team (3-1) returns to action at 4:30 p.m. Monday against South View at the Ninth Grade Academy Gymnasium.
