For a second year, the Richmond County Chamber of Commerce and its partners are holding a “Rally at the Rock” at the Rockingham Speedway.
“It’s a scavenger hunt with cars,” said Emily Tucker, president of the Richmond County Chamber of Commerce. “But no one is going to know where they’re going until they find clues.”
Last year’s rally had participants stop all over Richmond County for clues including, Ellerbe Springs for clues left on menus and even a stop at DeWitt’s Sporting Goods to sort through shotgun shells for their next clue.
“People are still talking about last year’s rally,” Tucker said. “It was a lot fun.”
Last year’s rally had roughly 30 people participate and this year’s event on Oct. 2 will only allow a maximum of 50 people to register in the event.
According to Tucker, the event should last approximately three hours, but the team’s time will be clocked when finishing the race.
Teams will be penalized if clues are missed or left behind, but when clues are acquired, teams should make sure they’re read well and in detail, Tucker said.
“No one know where they’re going and how long it will take,” Tucker said. “It’s all over Richmond County and could take you to the middle of the county, north, south or vice versa.”
Last year’s rally had teams driving down rural roads, through cities and around racetracks looking for clues to help them proceed to the next checkpoint.
“People pass other people and wonder if they’re going in the wrong way,” Tucker said. “Then they turn around and pass the same people again.”
“The Rally at the Rock” is a special event hosted by local businesses and sponsors to spark excitement in the community, according to Tucker.
The rally begins at 2 p.m. at the “Little Rock” racetrack and will end with the Main Street Cruise-In in Hamlet with a burnout contest hosted by the City of Hamlet and live music from local band, Ponder Blue.
Teams are judged on how fast they complete the event and what clues they pick up and decide to leave.
Winners will receive trophies and prizes and even those participating, but rank at the bottom, will receive a gift from the rally’s hosts and sponsors.
The registration fee is $60, which includes a driver and a navigator. There is a $20 additional fee for other passengers.
