In addition to greeting visitors, providing coffee and distributing magazines, volunteers at Sandhills Regional Medical Center have another important duty on their list: Operating the hospital’s gift shop.

Sandhills Auxiliary, a nonprofit group of hospital volunteers, now own and operate Sandhills Gifts. A ribbon-cutting and open house was held Sept. 11.

“We’re very excited about the reopening of our gift shop,” said Linda Burnette, interim SHRMC chief executive officer. “I think you will be very excited about all of the gift opportunities and we encourage you to do your Christmas shopping here.”

This is the first time in the hospital’s history that the volunteers have operated the gift shop, said Wanda Clark, SHRMC volunteer services director and patient advocate. “The gift shop is a way for them to give back to the hospital as well as to the community. We hope to make a lot of money so we can continue to give scholarships,” she said.

Each year, Sandhills Auxiliary provides a $500 scholarship to a HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) student; and helps a needy family at Christmas in addition to supporting other projects such as providing calling cards to soldiers deployed overseas.

The transition of the gift shop to the volunteers started under the administration of Andy Davis, former SHRMC CEO. The gift shop reopened on Sept. 8.

Both Burnette and Aletha Lanier, Sandhills Auxiliary president, recognized Clark for all of her hard work in preparing the store for opening. She spent many hours combing through books and ordering supplies and gifts.

“We do appreciate Wanda for working so closely with us,” Lanier said. “Do support us. We need your 65 cents for a Coke.”

Sandhills Gifts is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, gift shop at 205-8135
