The Highway Patrol is looking for the driver of a vehicle who struck a man on his bicycle on Highway 38 near Hamlet.

William Edward Griffin, 53, Baltimore Drive, Hamlet, was traveling southbound on Highway 38 on Sept. 2 around 8:15 p.m. when the driver of an unknown vehicle hit him. Following the impact he was slung off his bicycle and slammed into the metal guardrail adjacent to the road, according to reports.

“When I got there, we had nothing that we could go on,” said Trooper E.N. Bass. “At this time, it’s still unknown who did it.”

Griffin was transported for Sandhills Regional Medical Center in Hamlet where according to a family member, he was still in a medically induced coma and on life support as of last weekend. Currently, the doctors are most worried about the internal bruising and possible lacerated liver he suffered during the accident.

According to Bass, Griffin also suffered multiple broken bones.

There were two witnesses to the accident but no one has been charged, according to Highway Patrol reports.

“Best thing right now is for them to come forward or someone who knew about it to come forward,” Bass said.
