Singers and dancers from the cast of “I Love A Piano” perform a number from the show which has been described as “an enchanted, toe-tapping musical journey through Irvin Berlin’s America.” The show is the opening performance of the DeWitt Performing Arts Season. Season tickets are still available for all eight shows of the season.
The Robert L. and Elizabeth S. Cole Auditorium at Richmond Community College in Hamlet presents “I Love A Piano,” a musical revue of the songs of one of America’s greatest composers, Irving Berlin.
The performance features six actors and dancers and showcases over 60 of Berlin’s works. The show will be presented on Sept. 15 and begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available for the performance.
“The show tracks the life of a piano with one sour key through four generations of singers and dancers who have performed with and around it,” said Joey Bennett, director of the Cole Auditorium. “It’s as much an exhibition of dance ability as it
is a musical revue. The dancers perform tap dances, the waltz, the turkey trot, and the Charleston, just to name a few. The performance showcases the ragtime rhythms of the early 20th century through the swing music of the 1920’s and 1930’s and on to the music of the 1950’s.”
Berlin was completely self-taught, but composed over 1,000 songs and worked with some of the brightest stars of his day. He wrote both the lyrics and the melodies to his timeless songs, including “White Christmas,” “God Bless America,” “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business.” Berlin enjoyed a seven-decade songwriting career and a number of his songs have a place in popular society today.
