Man fires shot, grabs money and flees

At approximately 5:40 a.m. on Aug. 21, a store on South Long Drive in Rockingham was robbed at gun point by an unidentified assailant.

A man bolted into the store and demanded all the cash. After the clerk on duty said no, the robber fired a shot towards the employee. The bullet missed the clerk, but hit the wall adjacent to him.

According to police reports, officers on the scene found a .380 shell casing on the floor. The man grabbed some money and exited the store and ran towards Laurel Lane and Walnut Street.

Two witnesses were present during the robbery, one of which pursued the man but eventually lost him near Laurel Lane.

Other incidents reported by the Rockingham Police Department:

n At a home on Fayetteville Road, Rockingham, jewelry valued at approximately $30,000 was stolen while the homeowners were away.

n There was a disturbance on Alsace Street between two individuals and a child.

n A car on Broad Avenue was broken into and a $200 GPS system was stolen from the glove box.

n A business on Broad Street, reported that someone attempted to steal $106 worth of cosmetics.

n A domestic disturbance on South Stewart Street, Rockingham, involved a man assaulting a woman.

n Someone stole a bicycle valued at $100 from a home on Oak Avenue.

n A home on Lumyer Road, Rockingham, was vandalized after someone threw toilet paper across a front yard and onto a house.

n A resident of Summit Drive, Rockingham, reported liquid methadone was stolen out of their car. The methadone was valued at $10.75.

n A home on Aslington Street, Rockingham, was broken into through a back window and $3,480 worth of property was taken.

n A local business on Broad Street had $80 worth of damage to property after an employee destroyed much of it after a disagreement with management.

Arrests reported by the Rockingham Police Department:

n Howard E. Smith, 64, Hatcher Road, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor communicating threats. He was released with a written promise to appear in court.

n Carolyn Hoover Whittington, 34, Deweese Avenue, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor failure to appear. Her bond has been set at $2,000.

n Martha Lee Little, 44, South Hancock Street, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor failure to appear and misdemeanor driving with license revoked. Bond has been set at $2,000.

n Robert Lee Brayboy, 34, Freeman Road, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor resisting a public officer. His bond has been set at $20,800.

n Donnell Lamont Brooks, 30, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor failure to appear. Bond has been set at $500.

n Shawanda Swinnie, 20, Tillman Road, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor larceny. Bond has been set at $2,000.

n Bruce Green Allen III, 30, Crestview Drive, Rockingham, was arrested for misdemeanor failure to appear. Bond has been set at $500.
