Trooper follows trail of debris to find driver of wrecked car

Herbert Wendell Quick, 60, was cited for driving under the influence, careless and reckless driving and leaving the scene of a collision after veering off the right side of Hatcher Road, Hamlet, and colliding with a tree on August 15, patrol reports said.

A Highway Patrol Officer followed a trail of fluids and debris from his vehicle back to his home, approximately seven miles away.

Estimated damage to his 2007 Chevy is $2,500.

Other accidents reported by the North Carolina Highway Patrol:

-At 1 p.m. on August 1 on N.C. Highway 38 near Hamlet, Douglas Watson Frye Jr., 34, Maple Leaf Drive, Hamlet, was injured after being sideswiped while attempting to make a right turn off of Highway 38, the patrol said.

He taken to Sandhills Regional Medical Center in Hamlet.

Damage to his 1969 Ford was estimated at $700.

-On August 4 at 8:40 p.m. on N.C. Highway 177, Katrina Sherelle Howie, Macedonia Church Road, Cheraw, was injured after colliding with a utility pole after veering off the right side of 177, patrol reports said.

Howie was transported to Sandhills Medical Center.

Estimated damage to her 2005 Nissan is $2,000.

She was cited with failure to maintain lane.

-At 7:07 p.m. on August 8 on Midway Road near Rockingham, two vehicles collided after Anthony Edward Fucci, 87, Midway Road, attempted to make a right turn onto Midway Road and crossed the centerline and connected with a westbound vehicle, reports said.

Hank Larry Williams, 25, Chestnut Lane, Rockingham, was transported to First Health Richmond Memorial Hospital for injuries.

Damage to Fucci’s 1993 Dodge is estimated at $1,000 and Williams’ 1996 Buick is estimated at $1,500.

Fucci was cited with a left of center violation.

-On August 12 at 4:38 p.m. on Virginia Avenue, Jessica Wright, 23, Mill Road, Rockingham, failed to maintain lane control, ran off right side of road and subsequently struck a ditch and culvert, patrol reports said.

Two juvenile passengers were taken to First Health Richmond Memorial Hospital.

Wright was cited with driving with license revoked and failure to maintain lane control.

-On August 13 at 1:51 p.m. on U.S. Highway 74 near Hamlet, Gary Lewis Overcash, 46, Henderson Street, Hamlet and Lawrence Preanell Covington, 63, A Street, Rockingham, were involved in a rear-end collision after Overcash failed to reduce speed as Covington attempted to make a right turn, Highway Patrol said.

Covington was taken to First Health Richmond Memorial Hospital.

Damage to Overcash’s 2000 Ford is estimated at $2,500 and Covington’s 2002 Chevy is $3,000.

Overcash was cited with a failure to reduce speed.

-Curtis Keyon Edens, 21, Oak Avenue, Rockingham, was traveling south on Hoffman Road, Dobbins Heights, when he crossed the center lane and overcorrected. He than ran off the right side of the road and struck a utility pole, patrol said.

Damage to Edens’ 2003 Saturn is estimated at $9,000; the utility pole is estimated at $5,000.

Edens was cited with reckless driving and failure to stop at scene of a crash.

-On August 17, Jessica Nicole Vitaliano, 23, and Eric Louis Whitfield, 35, were involved in an accident on Mill Road after Whitfield failed to yield, Highway Patrol reports said.

Vitaliano was transported to First Health Richmond Memorial Hospital. Damage to Vitaliano’s 2003 Kia is estimated at $2,000 and Whitfield’s 2003 Oldsmobile is also $2,000.
