He graduated from Capitol Highway School. Later, he pursued his education in ministry. He preached his first initial sermon and received his local preachers’ license at Flat Rock A.M.E. Zion Church in Morven on Sept. 10, 1959. He furthered his education attending Clinton Junior College and Hood Theological Seminary-Livingston College in Salisbury. He pastored for 30 years. He also served as Chaplain for Hamlet Review Lodge #105
Funeral service will be held Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Green Lake A.M.E. Zion Church, 14280 Railroad Cross, Gibson, with the Rev. Rebecca Rorie, Pastor and Presiding Elder Michael J. Massey of the Rockingham District, Eulogist. Burial will follow in the Dobbins Heights Cemetery.
Viewing will be held on Friday 1-7 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Service in Rockingham.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Elaine Johnson-Gibson; his children, Minister Frankie E. Gibson of Arlington, Mass., Timothy F. Gibson of Rockingham, Julius S. Gibson of Hamlet, Amber O. Gibson of Rockingham, and Alice E. Gibson of Wilson, three grandchildren one sister, Amanda Gibson Briggs of Atlanta, Ga.
