In the early part of the season, a coach wants their team to begin to develop consistency and Richmond Senior women’s volleyball coach Wendy Wallace hopes it comes sooner than later.

Even though Wallace’s team struggled at times, the Lady Raiders defeated Cape Fear 25-20, 24-26, 25-15 and 25-21 to win their second match of the season Wednesday at Raider Gymnasium.

“When we play good, we are really good,” Wallace said. “But when we play bad, then we just stand around out there.”

Despite the Lady Raiders (2-0) up-and-down play against the Lady Colts, Wallace believes her team is close to putting it all together.

“We really didn’t do anything really, really bad tonight,” Wallace said. “We just need to fine tune some things. Our strength is going to be our offense. We were hitting at about 75 percent tonight and against a good defensive team like they are (Cape Fear) it can make for a long night. We just need to polish things up.”

Rebecca Kinsey led the way for the Lady Raiders with 15 kills in the match, while Natalie Brown and LaShay Brown had 12 and 11, respectively in the victory.

Richmond trailed 13-10 in the first game before Brown registered a kill on an overpass to begin the comeback. Allyson Wood notched a service ace to tie the game at 13 as the Lady Raiders began to pull away and Natalie Brown had five kills and an ace in the final seven points.

In the second game, the Lady Raiders squandered a 21-17 lead as Cape Fear was able to tie the match at 1 game apiece.

“When they made their comeback, we got down a little bit,” Wallace said. “We got a little timid out there. But our confidence will come and it will hopefully come out during the season.”

Wood’s serve once again provided the spark to allow Richmond to pull away from the Lady Colts in the third game. Wood began serving with the Lady Raiders ahead 15-12. Wood recorded three aces and Natalie Brown, Salina Bright and Kinsey each added a kill as Richmond extended the lead to 22-12. Bright closed out the game with a kill to give Richmond a 2-1 advantage in the match.

Richmond closed out the match in style in the fourth game as LaShay Brown had three kills in the and Kinsey’s final kill of the night gave the Lady Raiders the victory.

n In the junior varsity contest, Richmond improved to 2-0 on the season with a 25-19, 25-17 win over Cape Fear.

Wandesha Jackson had four service aces, while Jacque Brown and Lauren Knotts each had three in the victory.
