The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded $72,383 by the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program. No matching funds are required by the county.
If the commissioners accept the grant money at the meeting, the money awarded will be used in three areas.
n The purchase of a new 2010 Dodge Charger for the narcotics team.
n The Sheriff’s Office will use the funds to replace or repair the current repeater communication system, or transponder.
n The department will send someone to the University of Louisville Southern Police Institute Program for further training in budgeting, human resources and organizational training. The program will begin in February.
According to the agenda, $63,483 will be used for equipment fees with both the Charger and the repeater system. Tuition, training and travel expenses for the employee will cost $8,900.
Commissioners will discuss how the funds will be spent.
The board is also slated to talk about funding from the Cole Foundation.
The original $300,000 grant to clean up East Rockingham was cut by $100,000.
“Due to the loss of some of their endowment, they had to cut the amount they were offering,” said Richmond County Manager Rick Sago.
The project’s budget has been slashed and some expenditures have been completely taken out.
According to the agenda, $15,000 for professional services and $85,000 for demolition and clean-up has been cut due to the reduction.
According to Sago, they may have the opportunity to ask the foundation for more money to finish the project in the future.
Commissioners will also discuss a resolution to support the annual Million Father March in Richmond County.
