Special to the Journal

Community members interested in donating school supplies for unprivileged students in Richmond County Schools can still participate in the “School Tools” drive. The School Tools drive represents a special partnership with school districts and WSOC-TV. Eight local sites will host donation boxes, and a postal collection will be taken up on August 22.

“This is a great opportunity for individuals who were unable to make the Stuff the Bus drive to still donate any school supplies.” Ashley Simmons, Public Information Officer, said. “We are so thankful to all of the businesses, churches, families and community members who have supported our students.”

RCS, United Way of Richmond County and Wal-Mart sponsored a “Stuff the Bus” drive on August 7, and collected a number of supplies thanks to local businesses and families. Anyone who missed the event can still give by dropping off supplies at one of the School Tools drop-off sites.

The sites that will host drop off boxes throughout the month of August are: Ellerbe Town Hall, Rockingham City Hall, Hamlet City Hall, The Richmond County Daily Journal, Hamlet Public Library, Time Warner Cable, Leath Memorial Library and WAYN 900 A.M. School supplies can also be dropped off at the Richmond County Schools Central Office or at local Food Lion stores during the drive.

On August 22, local postal carriers will collect any school supplies that are put in mailboxes as part of the School Tools campaign.

School supplies needed include: 3-ring binders, one subject notebook(s) book bags, colored pencils, Crayons, folders (with pockets), glue sticks, hand sanitizer, highlighters, markers, notebook paper, pencils, pencil boxes/pouches, rulers, scissors, tissue, writing tablets, bound one subject notebook, dry erase markers, erasers, folders (with prongs), graph paper index cards (3x5), index tab dividers.

Students who are in need of school supplies should visit their school social worker or guidance counselor during the first few weeks of schools. School supplies collected in the drive will be divided among all of the schools in the district. The guidance counselors and social workers will identify student needs on an individual basis.
