If I were to sign this letter "Anonymous,” it would not be printed. Why not adopt the same policy for online comments?

I see a lot of nasty comments and some personal attacks by people using a pen name. If a person is too big a coward to use his own name, his comments aren't worth being posted. Although I seldom agree with any of them, I respect Bonnie Wheeler, Ron Murray Sr., Bill Lindau, Dana Saul among others, for having the courage to stand behind what they say.

Respectfully,

Delano Quick

Mr. Quick

I have written two letters to the paper and I agree with you...alot of nasty comments from folfs who, in my opinion, are too cowardly to sign their own name. We are adults. If you believe in what you stand for then why wouldn't you be proud enough to let folks know it. The way I see it..some of these people are church folks and what a crying shame it would be for their fellow brothers and sisters in Christ to see just how judgemental and nasty they really really are. But God knows your name!

Yes, some can call it cowardly not to sign one's name.

Perhaps about as cowardly as it is absurd to start a whole thread about just placing one's name.

The internet is a different community than the real world is. I'm a different person out from behind my desk as Bonnie is out of her rocking chair, as Ron is from his recliner.

Some people's views aren't that popular, and I'm quite sure as heated as a few people's statements are on here, that numerous people would have either looked up phone numbers, addresses, or places of business, if everyone's names were just so casually placed online.

One could say, for all those people that post from out of town, "Why don't you just write in your local papers? Why do you have to post in Richmond Co?" That's cowardly, too.

There are a lot of opinions that aren't placed here because of people's unwillingness to show their true names / selves.

The thing is, an opinion taken the wrong way, misconstrued, etc. can be taken and ran with and really damage character. Too often, as opposed to striking the argument, the commenter simply strikes at the character of the speaker.

Ms. Sauls, I'm a man, but since I left the "s" off your name, you can add one to mine.

Funny, the joke's on me.

That's the thing about the Internet, certain people feel the need to say things they would never say without hiding behind a screen.

Call me crazy, but I believe if you can't put your name on it, maybe you shouldn't say it!

I know what Mrs. Quick is referring to, and the absolute rude and childish comments made about Bill are just that, childish and rude! I am certain, not one person posting this junk under a screen name would ever say such things if they had to put a face or a name to what they say.

The reality about the people posting these hateful comments is this.... they simply cannot handle anything or anyone different from them. Any stretch from their version of normal puts an unexplained fear in them. It's sad, but very true.

Mr. Quick, you're right on target. If the paper won't reject personal attacks, then let them at least require the writers to give their names. I bet that's the last you'll see of that little peanut gallery.

By the way, catch this week's "Pearls Before Swine" comic strip; which happens to say something about online incivility.

To My Name: you illustrate my point, although to a much lesser degree than the remarks concerning a retired journalist a couple weeks ago.

Couldn't you have just said "nutsos" without referring to Republicans. I guarantee you there are as many good Republicans as Democrats, and as many demented Democrats as Republicans.

I'm a yellow dog Democrat but I'd much rather sit down at the table with Pat Buchanan and Joe Scarborough than with Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow.

I live alone, too.

I don't sign my name because I live alone. With all of the nutso republicans around I don't feel real comfortable signing my name.

Well it was a scathing personal attack against someone more than anyone's political views that prompted this letter. The malicious comment had no bearing on the discussion at the moment, just a coward using the anonymity of the system to spew poison against someone.

I welcome the free exchange of ideas, even those with which I disagree, but we can keep things at a civil level.

Let's see now, Bonnie Wheeler lives out of town, Ron Sr. is a retired auto worker, Bill landau is a retired newspaper person, when you have nothing to lose or can't be harmed because you live out of town, you can use your name. However living in a politically correct society better to use a pen name or you best be live out of town orretired..bugsbunny

Delano, there is a glitch in the "Comments" system. I have posted comments using my name to have it show up as "anonymous" when posted. If I make a Comment like this one it will show my name, but if I want to make a second post or a post on a different letter under the same log in it will request that I log in again but then will leave my name off the comment. You would think that once I logged in my name would be recognized no matter how many comments I post.

RCDJ has been notified of this problem but so far it hasn't been corrected. It wasn't that way when they first changed the comments protocol.

I suggest that people put their names in the Comments box when they type their comments.
