Kristin Surgeon, daughter of Willette Surgeon of Ellerbe, qualified as a National Finalist in the 2009 Pre-Teen America Scholarship and Recognition Program that was held July 3-8 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Baton Rouge, La.

Kristin attends Mineral Springs Elementary School, Ellerbe, and will be in the 5th grade this fall. She is also a member of Sidney Grove Church of Deliverance, Ellerbe.

She received the title of “Most Outstanding 10 Year Old” in the Junior Division.

In order to qualify for participation in Pre-Teen America, a young lady must have won her State Title (Jr. or Sr.), placed as runner-up or won the speech, talent or spirit winner category. Kristin won 3rd runner-up in the Jr. Division of the Pre-Teen North Carolina Program last year and therefore was eligible for Pre-Teen National Competition.

Pre-Teen America state programs are by-invitation only Scholarship and Recognition events involving young ladies 7 to 12 years of age based on their school academic records, awards and honors won and/or their participation in outside activities. Additionally, young ladies are invited who have been recognized publicly for their outstanding personal achievements, volunteer services, school involvement, leadership abilities or creative talents.

Pre-Teen America awards over $25,000 in educational bonds, prizes, awards and travel opportunities. Kristin said she is very grateful to her mother and church family who sponsored her and enabled her to attend this very prestigious national event.
