A dozen people have thrown their hats in the coming municipal elections ring over the course of the past week.

Local native and educator Teressa Beavers announced she will run for a seat on Rockingham City Council.

A 24-year veteran educator and Richmond County native, Beavers is currently an Early Reading First Project Director with the county school system. She and her husband Billy are local church members who are active in mission outreach programs and the Gideon Ministry.

“If elected, I would like to cut wasteful spending in the City of Rockingham,” Beavers said. “I think we should be watchful over our city’s tax dollars. We spend a lot in tax money here, and I want to be sure that it’s being used wisely.”

Beavers said she would also like to promote conservation campaigns, bring more culturally enriching events to the city and provide diversity to a council which has only one woman ont he board.

First-time candidate Molly Russell filed for Ellerbe Town Council. She said her previous involvement with the Small Town Area Revitalization (STAR) program’s work in Ellerbe, as well as planning the Ellerbe Home Town Christmas events, helped foster in her a strong interest for the well-being of her hometown.

“I feel that my involvment in those areas, coupled with my experience in local government, enables me to serve the citizens well,” said Russell, a senior planner for the Village of Pinehurst. “I would like to provide more accountability to the taxpayers and ensure a high quality of life while maintaining the integrity and small town charm that is Ellerbe.”

Hoffman Mayor Pro-Tem Tommy Hart is an incumbent of multiple terms on the town council.

A Hoffman native, Hart is a widower with three sons and serves as a layspeaker at Fletcher’s United Methodist Church.

“I would like to promote safety, the development of infrastructure and job creation in the Town of Hoffman if re-elected,” Hart said.

Monday was the first day potential candidates could register November’s vote with the Richmond County Board of Elections. The filing period expires at noon July 17.

Thus far in mayoral races, Incumbent Rockingham Mayor Gene McLaurin and challenger Bruce Stanback have declared their intentions to run.

Incumbent Hamlet Mayor Jeff Smart has registered, as well as Olivia Webb for the office of Mayor of Ellerbe.

No one has yet officially announced they will run for Mayor of Hoffman.

Four have stepped up for the race for three seats on the Rockingham City Council, Beavers and incumbents John Hutchinson, Shirley Fuller and Steve Morris.

Incumbent Evon Craven and newcomer Russell registered to run for the three seats on the Ellerbe Town Council.

Hoffman Mayor Pro-Tem Tommy Hart is the only person who has entered the race for the five open seats on that town council.

Incumbent Angeline David has been the only individual to register in the race for two seats on the Dobbins Heights Town Council.

well election time once again and now they need our support, most votes that are cast will be for one of the following reason. Color? who is your kin? who do you know? This is the criteria we vote by, not who is truly qualified, who really means they want to do something, anything to better our community, for the ones running the most important thing is to get elected,or re-elected and the very next day the ones who put them in office are forgotten until the next election. For two or four more years we will all complain, yet we are the ones who countinue to put them right back in office. here we have a man who is being investagated on fraud charges and yet he is bold enough to try to dip into the mayoral pool and try another angle to rip off the city. Look around at the condition of our county, how clean it is ,how well it is run,how many new jobs and new businesses are opening, and ask yourself are the ones in power the very ones we want to re-elect? What happened to the slogan, change?
