Discussing the project with Rep. Larry Kissell are, from left, Peter Raabe, director of American Rivers Division of North Carollina Conservation; and Howard Schnabolk, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Coastal Services Center, who are overseeing the work; Kissell and Rockingham Mayor Gene McLaurin.
The project is being coordinated with the City Rockingham, American Rivers Conservation, Pilotview Resource Conservation and Development of Winston-Salem, Resource Institute Conservation and Development and NOAA. A new opening on the south side of the dam will enable water to flow freely through the dam.
Rockingham City Manager Monty Crump told Kissell that with the free flow of water, fish will now be able to come upstream from the Pee Dee River to spawn. The city plans a water route from Rockingham to the river.
