Camp invention is a program for children entering grades one through six in the fall. The program gives students a chance to develop a passion for science innovation and ingenuity. Students solve programs together, building confidence, reinforcing values of teamwork and independent thinking skills.
Lisa Bigley, chemistry teacher at Richmond Senior High School, will serve as the program director.
“Research has shown that it's important to engage students' interest in science and math before the fourth grade.” Bigley said. “This program gives us the opportunity to enable our children to learn, develop, and use problem-solving and inventive-thinking skills through hands-on activities. It helps to enrich the learning process for math and science and does it in a way that is both fun and educational.”
Parents can expect their children to learn and have fun. They can expect their child to come home bursting with excitement over all of the things that we do. Students can expect to come to learn and have fun at the same time. The camp is open to any interested students. The cost is $205 for all days, which also covers the costs of snacks and a T-shirt.
Because money is tight for many area families, Bigley says she is seeking support from local businesses.
“Sponsorships and donations are welcomed. Any interested business or person is invited to sponsor an individual child.” Bigley said. “If anyone would like to help defray the cost of the camp to students, they can send a donation to me at Richmond Senior High School.”
Bigley says that donations are tax deductible. Checks should be made payable to "Camp Invention." For any other information, parents and community members can contact Bigley through Richmond Senior High at 910-997-9812 or at her home, 910-757-0259.
