Winning two separate titles at one event, as Brett Nesbitt did in last April’s IHRA Spring Nationals in Rockingham, is a remarkable feat. Doing it twice in six months at the same track is the stuff of legend.

Nesbitt has a chance to do just that this weekend when, after one false start, the IHRA Summit Pro Am Series returns to Steve Earwood’s Rockingham Dragway with eight championships up for grabs including Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and Top Stock.

The McLeansville resident, who, with dad Jeff operates Nesbitt Racing Engines, Inc., will be bidding for his third straight Rockingham Pro Am title in Quick Rod; his first in Top Dragster. Those are the two categories in which he doubled-up at the Spring Nationals.

Since the event was a complete wash out on its original date, the race schedule will be unchanged this week with the track opening at 10 a.m. Friday for a test-and-tune session, qualifying, time trials and IHRA national record runs on Saturday and single elimination finals starting at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Despite the rainout, Earwood is hoping that the majority of the almost 400 racers who had planned to compete on the original date will return for this week’s event.

In addition to the classes in which Nesbitt is competing and Top Sportsman and Top Stock, champions also will be crowned in Super Stock, Stock, Super Rod, Hot Rod and three Junior Dragster classes.

As an extra-added incentive, there will be a couple of special bracket events contested Saturday night with Nesbitt and another former IHRA national event winner, Fayetteville’s Chip Johnson, among those already entered.

One bracket, for Stock, Super Stock and Footbrake raccers, will pay $1,000 to the winner. The other, involving Top Dragster, Top Sportsman, Super Rod, Quick Rod, Hot Rod and Super Pro racers will pay a $2,000 winner’s purse.
