After hoping to name a replacement for David Lee this week, the school’s administration plans to submit a name to the Richmond County School Board at its next meeting June 30.
“The school board will not let us give a name until the end of June,” Richmond athletic director Hal Shuler said.
According to RSHS Principal Cory Satterfield, the school is still interviewing potential candidates.
“We are still in the interview process,” Satterfield said. “We are still going through the applications. We want to pick the best candidate.”
A name which has quietly surfaced recently is Lee’s. Lee submitted his resignation last November as the head coach to take the baseball coaching position at West Stanly.
Lee said he has been contacted recently by Richmond County residents thanking him for the work he and his staff did during his time at RSHS. During his tenure, Lee compiled a 44-15 record and captured two Mid-Southeastern Conference titles.
“Richmond County is a great place to work,” Lee said. “All the coaches there are very supportive and are great to work with. Plus, I can’t say enough good things about Hal Shuler and Cory Satterfield they are both great individuals.”
Despite returning to the dugout where he led West Stanly to seven straight Rocky River conference titles before taking the Richmond position, Lee did not rule out a possible return to RSHS.
“I guess in the coaching profession, you can never say never,” Lee said about being a candidate. “You can’t ever rule anything out.”
Satterfield and Shuler had no comment in regards to the future of Jason Norton, who guided the Raiders as the interim coach this season. Norton led Richmond to a 15-9 mark and the first round of the 4-A state playoffs.
Norton also refused to comment about his candidacy for the baseball coaching position.
In the meantime, Norton will coach the school’s team in the Central Carolina Scholastic Summer Baseball League, which opens play Monday at 6 p.m. at Pinecrest.
