Casey Snead is a member of one of the Richmond Senior summer league softball teams. The school will field two teams and open against each other at 5 p.m. on June 23.
For this reason, Richmond softball coach Wendy Wallace and three other area coaches decided to create a softball summer league to build team chemistry and work on developing younger players.
“The point of this is to keep the teams together as much as possible,” Wallace said. “With traveling teams, there may be two or three girls (from Richmond) on each team, playing different positions.”
Wallace said she hoped the other schools would be able to create two teams, similar to varsity and junior varsity teams on the high school level. However, Union Pines and North Moore were unable to field a second team, so Richmond’s and Pinecrest’s younger teams will compete with the older squads.
The ability to play an additional 10 games as a team will allow Wallace to begin to groom replacements for her two middle infielders, Brittany Tedder and Amanda Terry, lost due to graduation.
“We are going to hopefully have people with primary and secondary positions,” Wallace said. “This will make ourselves into a deeper team next year.”
The older team consists of Hannah Bailey, Morgan Denham, Ashlee Floyd, Kandace Frye, Alex Gardner, Brittani Hodges, Rebecca Kinsey, Ashley Leviner, Maggie McKenzie, Jerrilynne Porter, Faith Richardson, Taylor Satterfield, Casey Snead and Allyson Wood.
The younger team’s roster includes: Cierra Bowden, Kayla Carroll, Bailey Coulthard, Kaitlyn Gardner, Holly Hudson, Lauren Kelsey, Kylie King, Caroline Kirkland, Keonika McBride, Elizabeth Pitman, Maxie Poole, DJ Prevatt, Jenna Sedberry, Destiny Shoe and Abby Carpenter. The younger team will be coached by Jessica Kinsey.
The teams will open the summer schedule against each other at 5 p.m. on June 23 at Richmond Senior High School.
