Detective Robert Larry Smith Jr., 30, was taken to FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital Friday for treatment of bruised ribs. Damage to the patrol car was estimated at $4,000.
The wreck ended a chase of an Ellerbe man who was wanted on drug charges by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Vice/Narcotics Unit, Capt. J. K. Glidewell said Tuesday.
Bobby Gene Little, 26, Henderson Drive, Ellerbe, was arrested on felony charges of trafficking in cocaine by possession, conspiring to traffick in cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to sell or deliver, assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injuries, fleeing to avoid arrest, resisting a public officer, exceeding posted speeds and reckless driving to endanger.
His bond was set at $250,000.
Arrested along with Little was James Valentino Little, 36, Earl Franklin Drive, Dobbins Heights, who is charged with felony conspiring to traffick in cocaine. His bond was set at $10,000.
During the arrests, sheriff’s detectives seized 4.5 ounces of cocaine, a vehicle valued at $15,000 and $4,316.54.
The incident began in the parking lot of a restaurant on U.S. 1 South, Rockingham.
During the arrest, Little jumped into his vehicle and sped off, Glidewell said.
In the pursuit, Gildewell said Little lost control at Fayetteville Road and Steele Street and struck Smith’s vehicle.
Smith was shot once in the right leg in September during a raid on a suspected drug house on Rummage Packhouse Road in Norman. He was also shot in the side, but a bulletproof vest stopped it from penetrating into his body. He received the sheriff office’s first Purple Heart Award for being injured in the line of duty.
