Rockingham boy injured in wreck

Dajoin Thomas, 7, Cabel Drive, Rockingham, was seriously injured at 5:42 p.m. Wednesday when Rockingham police say he ran into the roadway on Shannon Drive in Rockingham.

He was taken by helicopter to UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill, for treatment of his injuries.

Police said a car driven by Quentin Karsten Leak, Rollins Avenue, Hamlet, was “The vehicle struck the pedestrian on the passenger side at approximately the side view mirror,” the police report said.

Leak told police he saw Thomas, slowed down, used the horn and applied the brakes.

Thomas fell back some eight feet from the impact.

Leak was cited for violation of his learner’s permit restrictions.
