Memorial Day weekend can be deadly if driving is combined with consuming alcoholic beverages, said Shirlyn Smith, coordinator for Citizens of Richmond for Responsible.

CORRL has posted billboards around Richmond County to urge drivers to be aware of the effects of drinking and to moderate consumption and seek alternate transportation.

Smith said getting caught driving while impaired can earn drivers costly penalties and risk the loss of a driver’s license.

Law enforcement agencies in Richmond County have joined those across the state in conducting a Click It or Ticket campaign through May 30 during which time license checks may be held for traffic violations.

Smith said for safer driving motorists should consider:

n Having a designated driver.

n Eat lots of food and non-alcoholic beverages.

n After serving alcohol, serve coffee and desert.

n Have taxi service numbers available for guests without a designated driver.
