“The idea is to have something that is uniquely ours,” said Hamlet resident Richard Garrett, a member of the Small Town Main Street promotional focus group. “We want to reach out and get the community involved. We want to get people excited about downtown Hamlet.”
That’s why from now until June 12 the Downtown Hamlet Logo Contest is accepting submissions from the community and beyond. A panel of local citizen judges and the Hamlet Business Development Association will judge all design entries, and the winner will be approved by the Hamlet City Council.
“What we’re trying to do is find a way to brand our downtown,” said City Manager Marchell Adams David. “And our downtown is all over the place; it’s spread out more than just on Main Street. So we’re looking for a way that whatever the logo is, people will say ‘Oh that’s synonymous with downtown Hamlet.’”
“I hope this will get people cranked back up,” said Ron Mayo, president of the HBDA.
“Downtowns redesign logos all the time as a way to reinvent themselves in the public eye and to let people know that downtown is still an area of interest,” said Shanelle Bullock, community development planner with the North Carolina Department of Commerce Division of Community Assistance. “Branding the downtown is important because it will distinguish the area from the rest of Hamlet; when people see the logo, they will know that it is Hamlet but Downtown Hamlet specifically.”
The winning design will be used on everything to banners and T-shirts to letterheads and promotional brochures.
Anyone can enter. Only original designs will be accepted and considered. According to the contest rules, each entrant may submit up to three designs. Each design must be labeled with the designer’s name, address, phone numbers and, if desired, e-mail address. All designs must be suitable for family viewing.
The winning logo will become the property of the City of Hamlet, and no other royalties or compensation will be given. City of Hamlet may modify the logo as needed. The decisions of the judges and the City of Hamlet will be final.
Each design must be submitted in one of the following electronic formats: JPG, GIF, PNG, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Publisher.
All entries must be postmarked or emailed no later than June 12 and must be received at one of the following addresses: Hamlet City Hall, PO Box 1229, Hamlet, NC 28345; 201 Main St., Hamlet, NC 28345; HamletLogoContest@gmail.com
